What emotions are you feeling right now? Quickly jot down whatever comes to mind. Make a list.
Now, go back and look at what you wrote down. Are these emotions based on facts? Take a moment to reflect on what is going on in your life.
You can also ask yourself, Do I think with my feelings? Do my feelings serve me well, or am I their slave?
Interviewing yourself—really trying to probe and figure out what’s going on—allows you to take an honest look at your emotions so you can compare them with the truth. Then you can tighten up that shaky table leg if you need to.
Leg #2: Your Physical Health
God created our amazing bodies and made them able to do great things—like run track, dance hip-hop, and play softball—so we need to take care of our physical selves. If you’re not feeling well overall, that might be a signal from your body—which has been growing and changing and needs to be taken care of—that you’re not meeting its basic needs. Our bodies need adequate rest, healthy food, and good exercise.
As a teenager, you need to make sure you’re well rested. That can be a challenge when homework—not to mention texting friends and hanging out on social media and keeping up with extracurricular commitments—makes for late nights. But you need to get some solid, unbroken sleep. And more than four or five hours a night.
You know what happens when you’re super tired. You’re prone to cry more easily, lose your temper faster, and forget things. We all do! If this leg of your table gets too weak and tired, the whole table feels shaky. So before you assume the worst about any situation, make sure you’ve had enough rest. You might just be exhausted.
The food we choose to eat matters too. While we shouldn’t obsess about food and calories, we do need to make sure we’re eating healthy—enough protein, not too much sugar, plenty of water—and that we’re aware of any food allergies or intolerances we might have. If gluten or corn makes you feel icky, don’t eat those things. If you feel yourself getting irritable and shaky when you skip meals, eat small meals frequently. You know what works for you—or if you don’t, talk to your parent or your doctor to figure it out.
We also need to be exercising regularly, whether that’s playing tennis or taking dance classes or riding bikes or even just walking around the block. Our bodies are meant to move, and exercising is a great habit to develop right now if you haven’t already. Researchers have found that when we exercise, our pituitary glands can release as much as five times as many mood-boosting beta endorphins as they do when we are resting. Simple translation: We feel better when we move!
